Information about the Parish (As at 2003)

The parish incorporates the settlements of Haytor Vale, Ilsington, Higher Brimley, Old Liverton, Liverton, South Knighton, Ingsdon and Chipley. Its boundary extends from the moors at the top end of the parish down to the other side of the A38 including Trago Mills and across to the Ashburton Road and bordering Seal Hayne.

This parish is the second biggest in area in Devon however its estimated population is 2,418. Of those 1,974 are electors.

The council tax in Band D for this parish is £1482.65 This year’s precept (the parish councils share of the council tax) is set at £23,865.00

The council meetings are held generally every fourth Tuesday in the month excluding August and December at either Ilsington or Liverton Village Halls at 7.30pm. The Planning Committee meets every second Tuesday in Ilsington Village Hall, when there are plans to be considered. Members of the public are welcome to attend all council meetings.

The Annual Parish Meeting is always held in March. This is a public meeting where members of the public are invited to put questions to the councillors and have the right to see the accounts of the village halls, playing fields and the Charities.

The AGM of the Parish Council is held in May this is the meeting that the Chairman and vice chairman are elected, appointment of representatives to the local councils association and other bodies and election of committees.

The finance committee regularly meets in October/November to consider the precept for the next financial year. Their recommendations are then put before the full council at the November meeting, for ratification, and the precept is applied for at the beginning of January.

There are twenty allotments in the parish on land which the parish council rents from Ilsington United Charities. Mains water is available from water tanks within the field and the allotments are leased out to parishioners at £18 per annum per plot.
